“It is very humbling to be here, part of something so much bigger than myself.”
Captain Nichola Goddard wrote these words in a letter to her parents, from her posting in the Panjwai district of Afghanistan, just a few weeks before her death.
She was killed in combat on May 17, 2006, at just 26 years old.
Nichola’s death made history. She was the first female Canadian Armed Forces member killed during combat duty, the first Canadian female combat soldier to be killed on the front lines and the first Canadian woman to be killed in action since the Second World War.
19 years later, we remember her bravery and the impact her sacrifice left on generations to come.
