The Alberta First Responders Association (AFRA) began as a Peer Support private group on Facebook on February 28, 2023. It has quickly grown into an active community of over 3,000 Alberta First Responders. It now operates as a not-for-profit advocacy organization with a mandate to empower the implementation of practical and immediate solutions for mental health support and suicide prevention programs for all Alberta first responders on a priority basis.
Who are our members?
The AFRA considers First Responders to be individuals who are or have been employed by or volunteered with an organization governed by a Code of Conduct, which provides operational oversight. These individuals, by the nature of their work, prioritize the safety and/or well-being of the general public above their own. This includes but is not limited to Coast Guard, Correctional Services, Emergency Dispatch, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Emergency Room (ER) Staff, Firefighters, Fish & Wildlife Officers, Peace Officers, Police, RCMP, Search & Rescue, and Military including Reserves & Veterans.
What are we building?
We are building a community of First Responders that puts mental health support and suicide prevention at forefront of priorities.
Is there a cost to be a member?
No, there are no costs to be a member and we work to raise funds to provide FREE mental health support and training opportunities throughout the year. That includes the “1st Health for First Responders” program and the free 12 month subscription to EchoLink —a secure, judgment-free mental health check-in tool designed specifically for first responders and military personnel. This also extends to free online mental health support tools for your immediate family.
